  1. There is currently no vaccine to protect against COVID-19. The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to this virus.
  2.  As of March 2, 2020, there are 87 confirmed cases of coronavirus reported in the United States and 2 confirmed deaths.
  3. There are no medications specifically approved for the coronavirus. Most people with mild illness will recover on their own with  plenty of fluids, resting, and taking pain and fever medications. (However, some people have developed pneumonia and require medical care or hospitalization.)
  4. If you were in China within the past 14 days and feel sick with fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, you should get medical care. Call the doctor’s office before you go and tell them about your travel and your symptoms.
  5. To prevent coronavirus from spreading through a workplace or shared space, routinely clean all frequently touched surfaces like workstations, countertops, and doorknobs. No additional disinfection beyond routine cleaning is recommended right now.
  6. While this virus seems to have started from an animal source, it is now spreading from person to person. There is no reason to think that any animals or pets in the United States might be a source of infection with this new coronavirus.
  7. This virus is not widely spreading in the United States right now, but the best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to this virus. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water aren’t available.
  8. Generally speaking, coronavirus symptoms usually appear 2–14 days after exposure. The CDC is studying whether the virus can be spread by people before they show symptoms. At this time guidance is that people are most contagious when they have a fever and symptoms.
  9. Because of the virus, travel to China and South Korea should be avoided. Older people and those with compromised immune systems should also not travel to Italy, Iran, or Japan.
  10. The COVID-19 outbreak has been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization as the outbreak continues to spread outside of China.  There are 87 cases across the U.S. BUT…so far, none in South Carolina.
